The Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival is the only festival in New York to bring together both legendary culinary icons from around the globe and America’s most beloved television chefs. Mirroring the charitable component of its sister event, the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Food & Wine magazine, the New York City festival is hosted by and benefits the hunger relief organizations Food Bank For New York City and Share Our Strength. 100 percent of the net proceeds from the festival directly benefit these community based initiatives.
Taking place primarily in the fashionable Meatpacking District and select landmark settings such as the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, the festival seamlessly integrates into the pace and lifestyle of the city. This year’s talents include Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay, Paula Deen, Ming Tsai, Giada De Laurentiis, Tyler Florence, Anthony Bourdain, Alton Brown, Martha Stewart, Tom Colicchio and Guy Fieri, to name just a few.

The French have a term they use to describe the unique characteristics of wine and other regional foods like cheese, meats and poultry. They call it Terroir. Loosely translated, it means “a sense of place” — the unique qualities of a wine or food product directly related to the region of the world where it is made. It’s the soil, the plants and animals that live in the surrounding environment, the climate and the cultural traditions and practices that make the area unique and affect flavor. This class will take you through several unique “terroirs” by comparing wines from Paso Robles to other famous wine-growing regions of the world.
Tuition is $40 per person; club discounts will be applied for CLUB 9 and CLUB 9 Onyx members. Seminar includes a tasting of 8 wines. The program will start at 1:00 p.m. and will last for approximately 60 minutes. Please call 805.239.2233 (press 1 to be directed to the Hospitality Center) to make your reservation.

Wine Tasting This Week during store hours
“Vino From Italia
“5 for $10
Venica Collio Friulano 2007
This vigorous wine, made from an indigenous varietal, with a careful vinification, develops unique characteristics: the color is straw yellow with greenish reflections, its bouquet is reminiscent of bitter almond, and its flavor delicately fruity. It can age for a few years in the bottle. Serve with poultry, fish, and pasta dishes.
Pieropan Soave Classico Bianco 2003
The 2005 Soave Classico (90% Garganega, 10% Trebbiano) reveals a delicate, minerally personality with sweet fruit and excellent length although it comes across as somewhat lean.
Balbium Terre Di Balbia Calabria Rosso 2006
The 2006 Balbium (Magliocco) is made by the Venica family, who are best known for the wines they produce in their native Friuli. This 2006 Balbium is a sleek, rich wine laced with perfumed red fruit, French oak and flowers. Medium in body, this attractive, mid-weight wine shows excellent length, even if the tannins dry out a touch on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
Marchesi De Frescobaldi Nipozzano Riserva Chianti Rufina 2006
Shows sweet blueberry notes, with mineral and lilac. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and vanilla and bright fruit flavors. Clean and racy. Best after 2010.
Dessilani Spanna Colline Novaresi Riserva 2005
There’s some stewed plum and jam on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with light tannins and a jammy, fruity finish. There’s plenty of fruit. Best after 2009.

When you enter the Lab, all the wine stored on the wall is red. On the left is our Rhone varietals section (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, etc.) and on the right is the Bordeaux varietals section (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, etc.) I love both of these groups of wines. Each group is often blended to create unique flavor experiences.
