The group C.H.E.F.S. (Coalition for Humane and Ethical Farming Standards) is currently in Sacramento fighting for the right to serve foie gras, which will be banned in California starting July 1st, 2012, when Senate Bill 1520 goes into effect. The law makes producing, selling, or serving any product that is the result of force-feeding an animal to enlarge their liver illegal. C.H.E.F.S. seeks to repeal the ban and is instead proposing new legislation that would create higher standards and regulations, like hand feeding and cage-free birds, for the farming of foie gras, ensuring that California farms are held accountable for treating animals inhumanely, and changing future farming practices.
