Proposed legislation (SB 3 — Leno) to increase California’s minimum wage to $11/hour in 2016 and to $13/hour in 2017 was approved by California’s Senate by a 23-15 vote (largely along party lines). The bill now moves on to the state Assembly for consideration. Last year, a similar minimum wage bill was also approved by the Senate, but failed in the Assembly. It remains to be seen whether SB 3 will meet a similar fate in the Assembly this legislative session. The current California minimum wage is $9/hour and is already set to increase to $10/hour in 2016.
