Chefs Sarah Stegner and George Bumbaris of Prairie Grass Cafe (601 Skokie Blvd.; Northbrook, IL; 847.205.4433) have designed new brunch, lunch, and dinner menus for kids as part of their commitment to the Healthy Fare for Kids initiative. Stegner is a founding member Healthy Fare for Kids, which aims to make healthier meals accessible to kids.
“Our goal is to offer at least one healthy choice on kid’s menus everywhere,” says Stegner. “We have a number of healthy options on our menu that are fun and delicious at Prairie Grass Cafe.”
Dozens of restaurants have joined Healthy Fare for Kids by placing at least one item on their menu for kids following the organization’s nutritional guidelines. Healthful kids’ meals are a top ranked food trend which helps restaurants stay competitive.
Prairie Grass Cafe’s new kid’s menus show that just because a dish is healthy doesn’t mean it can’t be fun and delicious. Kids can start with a snack of edamame ($3) or a mixed green salad with “Mighty Vine” tomatoes and balsamic dressing ($4). There’s also a kids combo with apples, carrots, cucumber, chunks of cheese and caramelized bananas ($5).
Entrées such as Filet of Sautéed Lake Superior Wild Whitefish served with grapefruit, carrots and capers ($11) or the Panko Crusted All-Natural Chicken Cutlet with crunchy apple slaw ($8) both have the Healthy Fare for Kids logo, showing they meet the initiative’s nutritional guidelines and are great choices for kids that parents can feel good about.
The new menus also have kid’s favorites, such as a Waffle with maple syrup and whipped butter for Sunday brunch ($7) and a PB & J double-decker sandwich served with fresh fruit for weekday lunch ($4). There’s always a Cheese Pizza with chef’s choice of vegetable during dinner.
Friday Night Special
On Friday nights, kids can create their own pizza ($10). The server brings the 10 pizza components (peppers, onions, homemade Italian sausage, oregano, basil, mozzarella, Parmesan, olives, mushrooms and marinara) to the table for the kids to create their own masterpiece pizza. Stegner really likes this because it gets the child engaged; it’s interactive, hands on and they get to eat their creations.
