Oaxaca remains a perfect travel destination.
The capital city is a jewel box of Spanish colonial architecture loaded with restaurants and talented chefs, great street food, colorful marketplaces, and top-notch shopping opportunities. Archeological sites like Monte Alban are some of the finest anywhere in the world.
We meet top folk artists at their workshops in nearby villages (Oaxaca’s famous black pottery, anyone?), beautiful hand-loomed rugs, or Jacob and María Angeles for the finest alebries (carved and intricacy painted fantastic animals). Hey, folk art lovers: the dollar is strong these days—a shopper’s dream!
For over twenty years Nancy Zaslavsky has been bringing small groups to her favorite culinary spots in Mexico for truly world-class foods. With her, you savor Oaxaca’s famous mole, mezcal, hot chocolate, unusual regional tamales, the largest variety of tortillas in Mexico, ice cream and sorbet flavors enlivened by exotic tropical fruits, and sauces and table salsas ground from Oaxaca’s largest selection of chiles in the world. YOu taste everything as the small group roams marketplaces for the most important flavors in the food capital.
The tour group eats at her favorite market fondas and street food spots and dines in sophisticated restaurants with Mexico’s top chefs—always tasting local specialties. In capturing the spirit of the important holiday we have a blast decorating our own altar. You’ll love making tamales at a cooking class in a traditional Zapotec home kitchen—and then rug shopping in the famous weaving village.
