FEAST Kicks Off $10 Meal Challenge to Share Healthy, Affordable Nutrition with Underserved Communities
The non-profit is gathering the best and brightest from the food community to fundraise and create nourishing recipe ideas for families of four on a $10 budget
From October 25 – November 8, the celebrated non-profit FEAST will run a virtual competition on Instagram to show the world it is possible to create vibrant, delicious, and healthy meals even with limited resources. While people in low-income households often have to rely on convenient and affordable meal options, FEAST maintains that good food and good health should not be a luxury, which is why all the recipes they teach in their Wellness Program are under $10. Each participant in the challenge will create a dish that can feed a family of four for $10 or under, and the result will be judged on nutritiousness, creativity, and presentation.
The $10 Challenge idea was born out of an increased need for food security and health equity amid the ongoing negative impact of COVID-19. Due in part to long-standing disparities, families living in poverty have experienced a mortality rate nine times higher than more affluent communities. FEAST set out to design an interactive campaign to spotlight these issues and raise money for their effective programs and services, including their signature 16-week wellness program in Southern California, New York, and Nebraska that includes food education, cooking and recipe demonstrations, and weekly grocery scholarships.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to engage our audience in a fun challenge with real impact,” said Executive Director Dana Rizer. “Our FEAST community members benefit greatly from easy-to-follow, nutritious recipes, and the money raised will not only feed, but nourish families for months to come.”
The competition will be judged by an exciting panel of celebrities, influencers, industry experts, FEAST leaders, and brands, and everyone can participate! The challenge features a category for Professional Chefs and Home Cooks, and the registration process is simple. Those interested in developing a marquee recipe can learn more about how to register here, and participants will be tasked with sharing their creation on social media alongside donation directions. Two winning recipes from each category will be featured in a cookbook for FEAST families to make affordable, flavorful recipes at home.
The $10 Challenge is generously sponsored by ServingSuccess and supported by brand partners Clover Sonoma and more. Along the lineup of noteworthy contestants participating includes Mary Sue Miliken, Behzad Jamshidi, Jordan Andino and Clemence Gossett.
Welcome to the FEAST kitchen – we can’t wait to see what you create. Happy cooking!
