Slapfish, the modern seafood shack founded by Chef Andrew Gruel, is slated to open a new location at University Center late spring.

The food truck-turned-restaurant presents an American seafood experience that revolves around fresh, sustainable fish that’s prepared simply and delivers big flavors. Chef Andrew Gruel’s ocean-fresh menu emphasizes bold flavors with seafood sourced from well-managed suppliers of eco-friendly seafood. To complement Slapfish’s commitment to sustainability, the store will make use of reclaimed materials and strive to earn the 3-Star Certification from the Green Restaurant Association achieved at its other locations.

Known for serving only the freshest fish and shellfish, a constantly changing chalkboard at the front of the restaurant names the Daily Fish options which can be served on a salad, in a sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and your choice of sauce on brioche bread, or as a plate served with rice and salad. Signature dishes include: the Ultimate Fish Taco, served grilled or crispy with your choice of Daily Fish, cabbage, avocado puree and pickled onion in a corn tortilla; the Clobster Grilled Cheese, half crab half lobster, melted cheese and tomato topped with Slapfish’s original “awesome sauce” and the Surf n Turf Lobster Burger, a griddled beef patty smothered in lobster and creamy caramelized onions. A selection of snacks, including Chowder Fries, Housemade Pickles, Handcut Fries and Creamy Lobster Dip, complete the modern seafood menu.

University Center has recently seen a wave of new restaurant and fast-casual food concepts, including Chick-fil-A, Eureka!, Snow Monster, Stax Cookie Bar and Tender Greens. Mendocino Farms will also be opening its second Orange County location at University Center in summer.
