Food Paradise

Watson’s Soda Fountain & Cafe of Orange will be making its big appearance on the television show Food Paradise, aired on the Travel Channel. Watson’s has a rich history in addition to serving many enjoyable, homey style foods. Originally, Watson’s was known as a drug store, first opened in 1899 at a previous location, then moved to its current location on Chapman Avenue. During the early years of the business, Watson’s Drug also sold sodas and ice cream, however these were prohibited from being sold on Sundays. This in turn gave way to the ice cream sundae, where they sold ice cream with syrup instead of soda water. As years have passed, the menu has evolved and the drug business diminished, but the same comfort foods have stayed on Watson’s restaurant menu. The current chef, Araceli Gutierrez, has embraced the heritage of the location while also striving to keep the restaurant current.

Another interesting tidbit of information is that the inside and outside of Watson’s has been used as a set for movies. Tom Hank’s “That Thing You Do” and “The Bench Warmers.” In addition to this, even President George W. Bush has stopped by to appreciate Watson’s tasty malts!

Watson’s will be featured on Food Paradise in an episode called “Keepin It Retro” on Sunday,  June 18th.

SECOND SEASON OF CNBC’S ‘RESTAURANT STARTUP’ PREMIERES TUESDAY, JANUARY 13 AT 10PM ET/PT
Investors Joe Bastianich and Tim Love Return for All-New Episodes
Chef, Restaurateur and TV Personality, Antonia Lofaso, Joins as Culinary Consultant
CNBC announced today that season two of the popular primetime series “Restaurant Startup” will premiere on Tuesday, January 13 at 10PM ET/PT. Produced by Shine America, the ten original one-hour episodes will feature restaurateurs, Joe Bastianich and Tim Love, who vie to invest their own money in restaurant concepts they believe could make them millions. Joining them this season is chef, restaurateur and TV personality, Antonia Lofaso, who will help guide the hungry entrepreneurs as they are put to the ultimate test: opening a restaurant!
Each week on “Restaurant Startup,” two teams, selected from hundreds of applicants, are invited to pitch their food ideas to the investors, Bastianich and Love. But, only one will receive the opportunity of a lifetime. The chosen team is given the keys to a working restaurant on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. They get 36 hours and $7,500 to put their dream to the test and create a business plan; come up with a branding campaign; and finally, launch their pop-up restaurant. Under the watchful eye of Bastianich and Love’s culinary consultant Antonia Lofaso, the aspiring food moguls open their doors, serve their food and test their concept on the public.
Based on the reaction from the diners, the quality of the branding and the viability of the business plan, Bastianich and Love must each decide whether or not they will put their own money on the line to make someone’s dreams come true – and, hopefully, make big money for themselves.
New addition Antonia Lofaso is one of America’s most popular chefs, perhaps best known for her role in the Top Chef franchise. And, as executive chef and owner of two restaurants in California, Scopa Italian Roots and Black Market Liquor Bar, she not only has the culinary expertise but also the business expertise to help guide these contestants through the process.
Joe Bastianich, restaurateur and TV personality, is behind some of the most internationally recognized dining destinations, including New York’s Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca and Del Posto; Las Vegas’ B&B Ristorante and Carnevino; Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles and Singapore, as well as the famed Italian marketplace Eataly now in New York and Chicago. His memoir Restaurant Man became a New York Times Bestseller in the first week of its release.
Texas restaurateur Tim Love is known as much for his savvy business acumen as he is for his signature urban western cuisine. As chef and owner of five acclaimed concepts, Tim is a culinary trailblazer, embracing bold flavors and wild game while pioneering the innovative use of wood to add flavor. Tim is the Official Chef at Austin City Limits Music Festival and featured at events around the world including the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and Lollapalooza in Brazil and Chicago. He is a co-founder of Austin FOOD & WINE, where he leads the world’s largest hands-on grilling demo every year

Esquire Network’s hit original series KNIFE FIGHT returns with 11 new episodes airing Tuesdays at 10/9c. Back to create more culinary anarchy, Top Chef season two winner and KNIFE FIGHT host Ilan Hall leads more underground cooking competitions, featuring some of America’s biggest chefs, crazy ingredients, few rules and even fewer prizes. The results? Pure cooking, straight respect and major bragging rights. In each half-hour episode of KNIFE FIGHT, two chefs face off in Hall’s downtown LA restaurant to make at least two dishes in one hour from a selection of mystery ingredients (some still breathing). In these anything-goes bouts, chefs vie for one-upmanship in front of a loud heckling crowd and judges that include respected chefs, food professionals and Ilan, himself. This round of KNIFE FIGHT face-offs include some of the culinary world’s biggest names, including James Beard Award winners, Michelin star owners, Top Chef contestants and Food & Wine ‘Best New Chefs’ (NOTE: air order TBD): Northwest meets Midwest when Adam Sappington of Portland’s Country Cat faces Michael Smith of Michael Smith’s Kansas City Restaurant. Sappington’s butcher skills come in handy as the chefs pull out all the stops to conquer a forequarter of beef. KNIFE FIGHT champ and LA’s Peruvian powerhouse, Ricardo Zarate, takes on Ray Garcia of Santa Monica’s Fig in a duel to keep his champion knife – by conquering a big ass octopus. It’s a whirlwind war for control of the Northwest when Seattle’s Jason Wilson of Crush throws down against Greg Denton of Portland’s Ox Restaurant. The chefs work to dazzle the judges with chicken gizzards, juniper berries and mystery ingredient, eel. It’s a tussle for Tennessee when Kelly English of Nashville’s Restaurant Iris goes head-to-head with Tandy Wilson of City House in Memphis. One competitor will give up the goose … and lose a little facial hair before the night is through.  In a clash of Californian female culinary crusaders, Mary Sue Milliken of LA’s Border Grill empire challenges long-time pal, San Francisco’s Traci Des Jardins of Jardinère in a battle with skate. Friendship is put to the test and the rivalry heightened when the chefs discover they are cooking for former Top Chef rival, KNIFE FIGHT judge Naomi Pomeroy. Rising star chefs of the California coast rumble as Jason Paulska of The Lark in Santa Barbara faces Kyle Itani of Oakland’s hip Hopscotch in a battle with live halibut. It’s competition with diversity as Jason’s bold farm-to-table taste is paired with Kyle’s smooth Japanese American flavors. With the deep fryer out of commission, these two fish might flop right of the table. It’s a battle for San Francisco as James Beard Award-winner and cooking competition veteran Charles Phan of the Slanted Door takes on Rising Star chef Anthony Strong of Locanda Osteria in a flying fish cookoff. The Midwest meets the Big Apple as St. Louis chef Kevin Nashan of Sydney Street Café tests his chops against NYC chef Harold Moore of Commerce. Butchering a whole spring lamb proves difficult for one of our chefs. It’s all fun and games until someone almost loses a finger. Who will be proclaimed the king of Mexican cuisine as Gilberto Cetina Jr. tests his skills against LA Magazine’s East LA Emperor: Chef of the Year, Ricardo Diaz? They face off with calf liver as their mystery ingredient Ricardo Zarate’s right hand man and former Top Chef contestant, Brian Huskey, battles against Michael Voltaggio’s protégé, Mei Lin of INK. The chefs are challenged to make their masters proud as they work with Silke Chicken. With these two young guns working frantically to prove themselves, something in the kitchen is bound catch on fire. In a battle of Colorado’s best chefs, Steve Redzikowski of Denver’s Oak at Fourteenth takes on the queen of seasonal American cuisine, Kelly Liken of the eponymous Aspen restaurant, in a battle with live spot prawns

An international audience will have their attention focused on one OC philanthropist who has been feeding the county’s poor children every night for 9 years. CNN, which bestowed its Heroes Award to Bruno Serato in 2011, will feature an update on his work in feeding OC’s growing hunger problem especially prevalent among its “motel” children, so named because their poor, working class parents are relegated to living in cheap, crime-filled motels. What started out as 2,100 meals each week has grown to 5,000 and he now served kids in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Buena Park and Stanton. In addition, he is now finding housing for many of those families.
CNN’s update on Serato will appear on both that network and its sister HLN on the following days and times (all times are Eastern Standard Time):
FRIDAY (4/18)
CNN: 8a, 11a, 3p, 9p
HLN: 6a, 7a, 3p, 4p, 8p
SATURDAY (4/19)
CNN: 10a, 3p, 5p
HLN: 12p
SUNDAY (4/20)
CNN: 4p
MONDAY (4/21)

Among Serato’s many accolades was recently being recognized on the Vatican’s own television network for the extraordinary lengths he took to keep the program growing despite personal sacrifice. i.e., he mortgaged his home to keep the program running. Also, he was also knighted by the Italian government, received a humanitarian award on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, honored by the Good News Foundation, received any number of proclamations, Man of the Year awards and other forms of recognition.

In California, citrus is part of our history and landscape. We’re the #1 fresh citrus producing state in the nation and California homeowners have more citrus trees in our yards than in any other state.
Now the state’s citrus trees are under attack. The Asian citrus psyllid is spreading throughout California and it can carry a tree disease called Huanglongbing (HLB), which is a death sentence for California citrus. HLB has already been found in the state, and there is no cure. But, with all of us working together we can save our backyard citrus trees and the state’s $2 billion citrus industry.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture, the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program, the United States Department of Agriculture and others are enlisting the help of homeowners across the state to battle the Asian citrus psyllid and HLB.
The public service announcements – available for TV and RADIO in :60, :30 and :20-second versions – give viewers facts about pest and disease, including what to look for, and what to do if they think they found the pest or disease.
The non-commercial spots, with no end date, are provided by the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program.
