Join The Ecology Center with their Backyard Skills: Backyard Chickens lecture and workshop to learn how to get started with caring for chickens in your own backyard! These feathered companions are good-natured pets with many benefits. But as with any new pet, you’ll want to know the basics first. This workshop will cover them all. Learn the basics of chicken husbandry and behavior, building and maintaining a healthy coop, breeding, disease and pest prevention, obtaining permits and more. Take home the supplies and resources you need to get started.

Chicken make great pets, but what are the added benefits? It all comes down to two, very natural and unavoidable things: food and waste. Chickens love to eat your vegetable or kitchen scraps, helping to reduce food waste and the size of our local landfill. Of course, what goes in must come out. Chickens provide fresh organic eggs and natural fertilizer for your garden in return. Get to know how you can care for these lovable fowl and watch food turn into waste – and waste back into food!
