October 15 is National Red Wine Day and Prairie Grass Cafe is ready to celebrate! Prairie Grass Cafe’s eclectic wine list is carefully curated by owner/partner Rohit Nambiar, who developed his wine knowledge working at the Four Seasons Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Chicago. Guests can expect to see a selection of wines that ranges regionally, with about half being American wines and the rest being choice options from France, Italy and Australia (prices by the bottle will range from $25-$200 a bottle and $6-$12 a glass.)

Nambiar has literally traveled the world, visiting the world’s finest wineries, studying and tasting, to bring to Prairie Grass Cafe a wide range of wine offerings reflecting his travels and interests. One such interest is quality over quantity. “My list at Prairie Grass is small,” Nambiar says, but “they are very personal. Each one I have tasted and picked for a reason, because it’s delicious and works with my wife’s menu.” It’s not a big list, which makes it challenging to select just the right wine at the right price for Prairie Grass.

“One of my passions is honing in on the best, fairly priced, easy to drink, delicious wines that bring out the flavors and connect with [Chef] Sarah’s food,” Nambiar says, which explains why Prairie Grass Cafe’s entire dinner menu pairs so well with a glass of red vino. He recommends the Crispy Half Duck and brown sugar glazed acorn squash over wild rice with a Pinot Noir, the Moussaka with layers of tender braised lamb, potato, and eggplant in a golden crusted Bechamel sauce paired with a Merlot, or the “Cedar River” All Natural Prime Filet (8oz) or Prime New York (12oz) in a red wine sauce served with a glass of Zinfandel. In addition, all of the red wines pair excellently with a slice of Double Chocolate cake. Or for the more daring, Nambiar invites guests to try their hand at selecting a wine from the cellar.

“This special celebration only comes around once a year but that doesn’t have to hold you back,” said Nambiar. “Make every Monday red wine day with our special Monday Night Wine Offer. Every Monday night from 5 – 8:30 p.m., we offer free corkage and half off your choice of wine bottles $60 and under. I like to be generous and once a week help my guests indulge in a great experience of food and wine paired well!”
