In what has turned out to be an annual tradition for LA’s top radio station, KFI-AM 640, host Bill Handel will broadcast his show live from the Anaheim White House on Tuesday, November 25 beginning at 5 a.m. to raise funds for Caterina’s Club, a nonprofit founded by chef and restaurateur Sir Bruno Serato that feeds 5,000 “motel kids” each week. This year’s Radio-A-Thon will expand into an all-day event during which personalities from KFI’s other shows will broadcast live from the restaurant. The public is invited to drop off pasta, tomato sauce and cash donations from5 a.m. – 10 p.m. and meet their favorite hosts.
This is the fifth year that Handel has lent his support to Caterina’s Club. Past efforts have resulted in donations totaling more than $500,000 in cash and 41,000 pounds of pasta and sauce.
“I can’t tell you how grateful I am to Bill and the entire team at KFI-AM 640 for lending their support to help the kids,” said Serato, who founded the nonprofit after his mother, Caterina, encouraged him to feed the underprivileged kids living right in his own backyard. “This has become our top fundraiser of the year and we are grateful that KFI-AM 640 expanded its support by creating this daylong Radio-A-Thon, which is crucial to keep the program going.
“This year, we broadened our reach from 1 to 5 cities, 15-locations, which means we have tripled the number of kids to feed each day,” he continued. “In addition, we have moved 61 families as part of our expanded mission to transition families from these dingy motels, where drugs, prostitution and crime run rampant, into homes of their own. So our needs are greater than ever, but we believe KFI-AM 640 and their loyal listeners will come to the rescue again and we thank them in advance for their support.”
In addition to gracing the pages of People Magazine several times, appearing on countless national television programs including “CBS Evening News” and being profiled in newspapers and magazines the world over, it’s his place among CNN’s Top 10 Heroes for which he’s best known. He has also been knighted by the Italian government, received a humanitarian award on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, was honored by the Good News Foundation (LA female newscasters who offer financial grants to worthy causes), received numerous proclamations, Man of the Year awards and other forms of recognition — all of which he has accepted to generate public awareness of hunger in our communities.
