The Food Consultants Group returns after summer break with a timely presentation reviewing some key provisions of the Food Safety Modernization Act.

The speaker is Masaaki (Mas) Hori. Mas has recently retired from the California Department of Preventive Health Services, Food and Drug Branch, in the Southern California area after 25+ years, as a Food and Drug Investigator, Senior Food and Drug Investigator, Supervising Food and Drug Investigator. He has experience in inspecting food products (including low acid food processing and HACCP systems), pharmaceutical products, medical device products, cosmetic products, and the bottled water industry. He has trained over 2000 individuals in HACCP.

The presentation will cover an overview of revised regulations that the food industry will be required to comply with in the next few years. Three major documentation areas that will be needed by the food industry:

  • Risk Assessment of (HACCP) or Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point plans needed for all food products
  • Sanitation Monitoring for GMP’s
  • Recall plans and mock recall conducted annually, to start

The Food Industry regulators will be documenting the compliance of their firms in these areas and the FDA will be auditing their documentation, just like the drug and medical device industry does right now.
