Join Nancy Zaslavsky’s exciting culinary tour of Mexican food markets in downtown L.A.’s exciting wholesale district for party piñatas, tropical fruits, chiles, spices and cookware such as molcajetes, metates, tortilla presses, comales, cazuelas, and huge tamale steamers. Enjoy terrific street food snacking opportunities along the way.
We stop at a bakery known for pan dulce (Mexican sweet breads and rolls) and great tamales to take back home and freeze for your next fiesta.
We roam a big swap meet where you would swear you’re in Mexico. Shop for traditional candies and sweets, herbs, fresh and dried chiles, meats, and cheeses. You find cowboy hats, belts, boots, and chaps. Snacks include just-out-of-the-caldron churros, and they are the real deal here.
Lunch is at La Casita Mexicana (where I was a judge on Bobby Flay’s “Throwdown”) for an array of their best dishes. You won’t leave hungry!
