Perry’s Steakhouse & Grile (5 Oakbrook Center, Oak Brook, IL 60523; 630-571-1808) is helping guests experience The Art of the Blend, this fall, by offering a special red blend wine tasting flight for just $26. The flight will be available during the month of September and features three, 2-ounce pours of different Rodney Strong Red Blend wines: the 2014 Symmetry Meritage Red Wine, 2015 Rowen Red Wine and 2015 Upshot Red Wine Blend.
Carefully selected by Perry’s Corporate Sommelier and Beverage Director Susi Zivanovic, the flight promises to provide new insight and a better understanding into the nuances of red blends for both wine connoisseurs and novices alike.
“Think of a red blend as a designer wine,” says Zivanovic. “Wine-making becomes a process of understanding and balancing the characteristics of each grape to best complement one another—an effort which results in a strikingly complex and uniquely individual wine.”
Blending grape varietals has been practiced in most major wine growing regions for centuries. Understanding the components of a red blend further enhances the drinking experience, which is why Perry’s is pleased to provide this tasting opportunity and carefully selected flight.
The first pour of the tasting flight, the Symmetry Meritage Red Wine, consists of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 percent Malbec, 5 percent Merlot, 4 percent Petit Verdot and 3 percent Cabernet Franc. The combination creates a rich flavor profile of black cherry, plum, black fig and rose petals, which unfold into silky layers of black fruit, minerality and baking spices with a lingering finish. The Rowen Red Wine, the second pour, is 55 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 percent Malbec, 17 percent Syrah and 2 percent Viognier. It is full of lush and elegant flavors of black raspberries, cocoa, black pepper, nutmeg and vanilla with an exotically floral and well-balanced finish. The final pour, the Upshot Red Wine Blend, is 37 percent Zinfandel, 30 percent Malbec, 27 percent Merlot, 3 percent Petit Verdot and 3 percent Riesling. The blend is bursting with blackberries, layers of licorice, lush blueberry, white pepper and spice, rounded tannins and with a long finish.
“This flight intentionally highlights the diversity of the flavor profiles available with red blends – all three of these pours are unique,” says Zivanovic. “Symmetry has Cabernet Sauvignon as the primary grape varietal while Rowen has a high percentage of Cabernet with Malbec and Syrah playing supporting roles. Upshot, on the other hand, has a high percentage of Zinfandel and Malbec. Not only do the flavors in this flight provide an interesting contrast, but the flight also encourages guests to try two new blends – the Rowan and the Upshot.”
After tasting each of these unique wines, guests can purchase and enjoy their favorite blend by the glass: $35 for a glass of the Symmetry Meritage Red Wine, $30 for a glass of the Rowen Red Wine and $16 for a glass of the Upshot Red Wine Blend. Additionally, as part of Perry’s The Art of the Blend promotion, wine-lovers can enter to win an exclusive, signed print of Robert Roth’s “Deep Sky,” artwork featured on the Rowen Red Wine bottle. Those interested will be able to enter to win on social media: @PerrysDining.
Though Cabernet Sauvignon has long been considered the ‘king of red wine,’ the popularity of red blends continues its rapid growth and upward trajectory. Having already exceeded Pinot Noir and Merlot in sales-by-volume in the United States, red blend wines are gaining traction among wine drinkers across the country.
Perry’s is proud to have been honored with Wine Spectator’s 2018 Award of Excellence, an award which the restaurant has won and continues to win year after year. This award recognizes restaurants whose outstanding wine lists feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers along with a thematic match to the menu both in price and style.
