Over 160k Urge Costco, Walmart and Carrefour to Stop Selling Shrimp Whose Production Relies On Slave Labor In Southeast Asia
Consumer Group Calls on Costco, Walmart and Carrefour to Join Project Issara and Institute a Zero-Tolerance Policy on Slave Labor
More than 160,000 people from around the world have signed onto a new petition from SumOfUs.org urging Costco, Walmart and Carrefour to stop selling shrimp and prawns whose production relies upon slave labor in Asia, and join Project Issara, a cutting edge Thai intiative to end modern slavery in that country.

The petition comes after a report by The Guardian last month found that shrimp and prawns sold in the United States and United Kingdom were often produced using slave labor in Thailand. According to The Guardian, the world’s largest prawn and shrimp farmer, the Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand (CP) Foods, is the prime supply offender, buying from suppliers that work directly or indirectly with slave-manned fishing boats.

SumOfUs.org’s campaign urges the three largest grocers in the world — Walmart, Carrefour, and Costco — who were named specifically in The Guardian’s investigation and have yet to take action, to join Project Issera, an initiative by Anti-Slavery International to eliminate slavery within export-oriented industries in Thailand. The Project seeks to push brands that may be buying slavery-made products to use their brand power to eliminate slavery within global supply chains.

Testimony from escapees reveals the gravity of this exploitation. One trafficking victim said he had seen as many as 20 fellow slaves killed in front of him.
