Doris Crandall – In Memorium
January 29, 1923 – October 30 2008
Friday November 7, 2008, friends, restaurateurs and business associates gathered at the Anaheim White House (The) – Anaheim to celebrate the amazing life of an extraordinary lady, Doris Crandall, who recently passed away following a long struggle with cancer.
For years, Doris Crandall was the food editor for both the Anaheim Bulletin and the Orange County Register, later joining the staff of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. She became an acclaimed restaurant writer and critic in 1959 and was featured regularly on numerous radio and television shows.
In 2001, she created, with a long time friend and associate, James Woodin, the Academy of Culinary Professionals, a dining group who now counts more than 200 members.
In March 2008 the Southern California Restaurant Writers, an organization she founded 35 years ago, honored her at her final public appearance, a dinner attended by over 400 restaurateurs from the Southern California area.
Doris Crandall was preceded in death by husbands Richard Sylvis and Art Crandall and daughter Valerie Sylvis.
