Wanted: Bakers, Builders and Brewers For The 2010 OC Fair Competitions and Contests

The OC Fair is inviting all local crafts-people, bakers, wine-makers, home beer brewers, farmers, gardeners, photographers and other artisans to display their talents in one of the hundreds of 2010 OC Fair Competitions and Contests. People with some talent and a little competitive spirit can enter in a variety of competitions and contests covering everything from baking and crafts to homemade beer and wine-making or graphic arts and sculpture. Winning entries will be displayed for more than a million Fair-goers to view throughout the 2010 OC Fair, July 16-August 15.

Here are the various categories and divisions offered this year:
Crafts and Hobbies Fiber Arts, Hand Crafts and Hobbies, Jewelry, and Collections.
Tasty Creations Culinary Arts, Homemade Beer, and Wine.
Things That Grow Farm and Garden, Floral and Livestock.
Visual Arts Photography and Non-traditional Prints, Sculpture, Painting, Graphic Arts, and Woodworking.
Youth Collections, Culinary Arts, Farm and Garden, Fiber Arts, Fine Arts and Photography, Floral, Fun Zone Contests, Crafts, Creative Writing and Jewelry.

Entry forms are currently being accepted online at ocfair.com/competitions. The deadline to submit entry forms for most of the competitions is May 26.

In addition to the traditional best cakes, pies and preserves, the OC Fair is offering six separate opportunities for amateur cooks and bakers to showcase their culinary skills in special themed competitions that will be judged and awarded live at the Fair.

These Culinary Competitions include: Art of the Tart (July 24); Hot! Hot! Hot! Chili, Wings and Salsa Challenge (July 25); Retro Baker Regatta (July 31); Bacon Bac-Off (August 1); International Foods Festival (August 8); OC Cupcake Classic (August 14 – also open to youth competitors ages 9-18). Registration for these competitions is the Wednesday before each event.

The Fair will let the youngest Fair-goers demonstrate their skills in a variety of Single-Day Contests open to children ages 3 to 18 that are hosted in the Fun Zone. Eating contests are daily at 7:30 p.m. Sign-up begins at 7 p.m. Additionally, special culinary arts and crafts contests include: Clown Cookie (July 12); Circus Critter (July 22); Orange Seed Spitting (July 28); Crazy Hair (July 29); Future Magician’s (July 31, pre-registration required); Big Top Hat (August 4); Pet Rock (August 5); Recyclers Rule (August 11); and Button Boys and Cork Cuties (August 12). Children can sign-up for most of these contests a couple of hours before each contest.

The 2010 OC Fair, themed The Beat Goes On, runs July 16 – August 15 and will bring 23 days of food, rides, exhibits, animals, music and fun, as well as the popular Super Pass, Pacific Amphitheatre Summer Concert Series, Action Sports Arena and the new entertainment complex, The Hangar. The Fair is open Wednesday-Sunday.
