After 200 fast food workers staged what theNew York Times called the “biggest wave of job actions in the history of America’s fast food industry” yesterday, employees today were walked back into work by elected officials, community members, and clergy to support their call for a living wage and the right to form a union without interference.
The goal of the workers’ campaign, called Fast Food Forward, is to get New York’s economy moving again by putting money back in the pockets of the 50,000 men and women who work hard in the city’s fast food industry, but still can’t afford basic necessities like food, clothing, and rent.
After an outpouring of support from community and elected officials, the Wendy’s worker who was fired is back on the job. Councilman Jumaane Williams was instrumental in pushing for the worker to be reinstated. Other groups who joined the delegation include United New York, the Working Families Party and New York Communities for Change.
