If you’re in the mood for, say, getting some drinks and watching a game, or listening to live music, maybe doing a little dancing and, oh yeah, a nice dinner in downtown Long Beach, Ron Hodges has pretty much cornered the market on doing all of that in one building.

The Carvery, a new restaurant with a focus on smoked meats and craft drinks is the latest addition to the Rowan-Bradley Building, or as it’s been dubbed by Hodges and his son Riley, who own and operate the building, Shannon’s Corner.

“That was the original idea that you could come and spend the whole evening here. Going out to dinner, check the scores at (the bar) and then go upstairs and dance,” Hodges said a couple of days before the grand opening of his new restaurant, which sits on the ground floor of the Art Deco building on the northwest corner of Pine Avenue and Broadway.

The building houses Shannon’s on Pine, a sports bar that opened in 2006 which was recently upgraded with a mezzanine, as well as At The Top, an airy second floor nightclub, events space and live music venue that’s surrounded by windows that opened in 2017.

And as of this month if you’re a serious carnivore you can chomp down on slow roasted and lightly smoked prime rib ($37), charcuterie and cheese plates ($24), a 14-ounce rib eye steak ($42) and drinks at The Carvery.

“It’s a little more high-end American fare, but a very comfortable atmosphere,” said Eva Maldonado, The Carvery’s general manager.

“We’re going to be known for our prime rib as well. It is a smoky, really long smoked prime rib so it’s very tender, very juicy,” she added.

Set behind a patio and glass wall that face the street corner and accessible from Shannon’s the sports bar through a side door, The Carvery includes 10 booths and a bar set under soft lighting that emits a golden hue while a mezzanine overlooks the restaurant.

Besides big meaty dishes The Carvery also offers vegetarian fare including a kale, spinach and quinoa salad ($12) and the Green Machine sandwich, made with edamame, avocado, mixed greens and roasted red peppers ($12).

Drinks include the McCarthy’s Rx Penicillin ($13), made with McCarthy’s whiskey and Oban scotch and the 1738 ($17), made with 1738 Remy Martin cognac.

Another thing available at the restaurant is access, since those who dine here will get to skip the line for the At The Top club during busy weekend dance nights and instead be escorted right up from The Carvery, Maldonado said.
