On July 25, 2012, Billabong‘s Design for Humanity event was benefit to theChipotle Cultivate Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to creating a more sustainable and healthful food supply and to raising awareness of food issues. Billabong donated 100% of event ticket sales and additional proceeds from an art auction and product collaboration sales to the foundation, which will in turn contribute proceeds, estimated at $100,000, toVeggie U programming.
“We are thrilled to have been selected as this year’s Design for Humanity beneficiary,” said Chris Arnold, spokesman for the Cultivate Foundation. “Billabong’s generous contribution enables us to put money in the hands of organizations like Veggie U, and to support food education in thousands of elementary and special needs classrooms.”
Veggie U’s Classroom Garden program gives students the opportunity to learn about food and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The Cultivate Foundation donation will allow some 30,000 students to participate in the fun and educational Veggie U program. Each participating class receives a kit complete with seeds, soil, flats, root view boxes, grow lights, a box of tasting veggies fromThe Chef’s Garden, and a worm farm, giving the teacher all of the materials needed for this hands-on study. This program allows students to see, hear, taste, feel and experience the process of planting, growing, harvesting, and eating food they have grown in their classroom.
