For the eighth year in a row, Huntington Beach’s Surf City USA Marathon is teaming up with Irvine-based Free Wheelchair Mission, an international nonprofit organization, to raise funds for those in need. The Free Wheelchair Mission provides wheelchairs to disabled individuals living in impoverished, developing nations. The “Run for Mobility” encourages all participants in the marathon to use the race as a way raise funds for the organization.

Since the start of the 2006 partnership, Surf City USA Marathon runners have raised almost $2 million for the organization, which has allowed the group to provide 35,000 wheelchairs to people in need. The 2012 “Run for Mobility” included 350 runners and raised enough funds for 2,400 wheelchairs.

The 2013 Surf City Marathon will take place the morning of Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. The event includes a full 26.2-mile oceanfront marathon course, as well as a half-marathon.
